What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a genetic neurobiological learning disability that affects one in five people worldwide, male and female equally. It may manifest in childhood or remain undetected until one’s teenage or adult years. People with dyslexia may have trouble with reading comprehension, writing, or spelling. However, dyslexic individuals often excel at activities controlled by the right side of the brain, such as art, music and other forms of creativity and intuition.

Audiobooks and the Dyslexia Community

Audiobooks help develop one’s vocabulary and literacy skills. Listening to audiobooks stimulates the same area of the brain as reading print. They help cognitive processes like thinking, knowing, remembering, and problem-solving. An audiobook highlights the vivid imagery of the story and is a special gift to those who have dyslexia.

Audiobook Narrator Linda Mcdade’s dyslexia journey

Linda McDade, audiobook narrator for Maggie MacCormack and the Witches’ Wheel, was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 10. She struggled with reading and spelling and often felt frustrated at not being able to keep up with her classmates, sometimes even suffering the cruel mockery of schoolteachers who lacked the compassion and skills to recognize and accommodate Linda’s particular educational needs. Eventually, Linda received the specialized training necessary to read physical books comfortably on her own, and the agency to progress independently through her academic studies. Today, she is a mother of twin girls, a stage actor, and a narrator of several projects available on Audible.

Why did you choose Dyslexia organizations in Scotland and Canada?

Author Kaja Blackley is Canadian from Scottish parentage, and audiobook narrator Linda McDade is Scottish. It made sense for both to donate a part of the profits from the sale of each audiobook adaptation to these two organizations to help them with dyslexia research and education.

What percentage of the audiobook profits is donated to each organization?

From each sale of the audiobook adaptation of Maggie MacCormack and the Witches’ Wheel, 10% of the profits will be donated to Dyslexia Scotland and 10% will be donated to Dyslexia Canada, to support children and adults with dyslexia, many of whom continue to suffer this genetic learning disability in silence.
